Candles can add a warm glow to special evenings, their fragrance adding memories of favorite flowers or spicy foods from Grandma’s kitchen. Other fires occur when candles are misused in some way. Here are some basic safety tips to follow when burning candles, either indoors or outdoors. Always extinguish candles when you leave a room or area where they are burning. Never leave burning candles unattended. Keep burning candles well away from flammable materials, such as drapes, bedding, paper, decorative items or clothing. Place your lit candles safely away from children or pets, who may inadvertently knock them over. Always use a candleholder that is heat-resistant, with a sturdy base large enough to hold any dripped wax. Candles and candleholders should always be put on a stable heat-resistant surface, away from drafts, vents, ceiling fans and open windows, where the flame can be blown into flammable materials or curtains. Outdoor candles must be sited away from foliage, and placed high enough for people to be aware of them. They should always be contained in wind-proof sconces, shades or lanterns. Extinguish all candles when the flame reaches within an inch and a half of the bottom of a taper, or when a container candle has only 1/2 inch of wax remaining. This prevents damage to the surface the candle is set on, and will prevent the container from cracking due to excessive heat. In pillar candles, extinguish the flame if the wax pool approaches the candle’s outer edge. Place candles at least 3 inches apart so they don’t melt one another or create heat drafts that can cause improper burning. Keep the pool of liquid wax free of trimmings, matches and any debris that may ignite and cause uneven or rapid burning. Do not touch or move votive or container candles that use gel waxes while the wax is liquid. Snuff out all candles with a candle snuffer, so hot wax will not splatter. By following these common-sense safety tips, you can enjoy the ambiance of candles throughout your home and even create an enchanting outdoor world with candlelight.
